How it works

This unit completes the skillset CUASS00063 - Specialist Entertainment Rigging Skill Set (Theatre). Ideally, you will have already completed the high risk elements – Dogging, Basic Rigging, and Intermediate Rigging; you will have your White Card and will have completed your Work at Heights before working in the theatre environment. The unit CUAWHS313 Apply work health and safety practices in a live production environment is completed as part of this training.

Course Details

This unit describes skills and knowledge required to operate manual and automated flying systems that raise and lower soft hangings and flats, and 'fly' scenery items into and out of performance spaces. It involves completing setup tasks for flying operations, flying elements of the set and completing wrap-up tasks.

The unit applies to those who work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring the smooth operation of flying systems for productions in the entertainment and events industries.

HOURS OF STUDY/REQUIREMENTS

This unit will comprise approx. 8 hours (1 day) of classroom based study (which may be completed online if available) followed by two practical blocks.

The trainee must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • operate flying systems for at least two different productions.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • follow safety procedures
  • use communication systems according to organisational procedures and safety requirements
  • use flying systems within their rated capacity
  • work collaboratively with others involved in the production.

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

Resources Required

  • All course materials are provided to the student in printed format, but may be available in electronic format for assessments.
  • Students may require access to a computer or internet at home/work or you may use those available at our facility during normal business hours (if available)
  • Assessments may be submitted electronically via eMail, on an USB memory stick, by a link to DropBox (or similar) or in hard copy version via mail. (Ensure that you retain a back-up copy of your assessment tasks.)

Entry requirements

You are required to have:

  • Intermediate computer skills in order to utilise online resources (if required) and to complete take home assessments
  • A high level of literacy and numeracy
  • Access to the internet and a current email address
