Animal care is one of the broadest vocational industries in the country. It spans companion animal care, veterinary nursing, equine management, animal behaviour and training, wildlife handling, animal technology, facility management, and animal regulation. The animals are different. The environments are different. The skill sets are different. What they share is that the work requires people who are trained, competent, and genuinely capable of making decisions about the welfare of animals in their care.
This is not an industry you walk into on enthusiasm alone. Animals don't respond to good intentions. They respond to calm, confident, skilled handling — and to the knowledge behind it. Nutrition, health assessment, behaviour, restraint, facility management, regulatory compliance — these are technical skills that have to be learned, practised, and demonstrated in a real working environment.
The animal care industry employs people across veterinary clinics, animal shelters, boarding and grooming facilities, equestrian centres, racing stables, wildlife parks, zoos, research facilities, councils, and government regulatory agencies. It is a large, diverse, and growing employment sector — and it is consistently short of people with formal, nationally recognised qualifications.
The qualification pathway in this silo runs from Certificate I through to Certificate IV, across five distinct streams — general animal care, horse care, animal technology, animal behaviour and training, and facility and regulatory management.
Entry level roles include animal attendant, stable hand, veterinary assistant, kennel hand, and wildlife carer. From there, the industry rewards specialisation and depth. Veterinary nurse. Animal trainer. Equine care specialist. Facility manager. Animal regulation officer. These are defined professional roles with defined skill requirements — and the qualification pathway maps directly to them.
The equine stream is its own career world. Horse care, stable management, equine health monitoring, breeding programs, performance horse facilities, equine rehabilitation — the depth of specialisation available within the equine industry alone is significant, and the demand for properly trained people in it is consistent.
For candidates interested in wildlife, the animal care qualifications include units that address wildlife handling and care — a pathway into wildlife parks, rescue organisations, and conservation programs.

You train alongside animals, under the supervision of an approved workplace mentor who is already working professionally in your chosen area of the industry.
Before training begins, we identify and approve a suitable workplace mentor in your environment — an experienced professional whose role is to supervise your practical work, monitor your development, and sign off your competency against the national standard. We assess and approve them, brief them on what is required, and support them throughout. The quality of your training doesn't depend on finding a good workplace by accident — we make sure the right supervision structure is in place before you start.
Your progress is documented against the national competency standard — a structured record of what you can do, demonstrated on real animals, in a real working environment, under real conditions.
