Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural arts is not a subject. It's a living practice — storytelling, visual arts, performance, craft, and cultural expression that has been passed down across generations and continues to evolve in contemporary contexts.
Training in this space is unlike any other pathway on this site. The knowledge doesn't come from a textbook. It comes from community, from Elders, from Country, and from the people who carry and practise it. What a formal qualification does is recognise that knowledge — give it a credential that the broader economy understands and respects.
For practitioners, artists, and community members already embedded in cultural arts practice, this training pathway offers formal recognition of what they already do and know. For organisations working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, it offers a structured framework for supporting and credentialling the people who carry cultural knowledge and deliver cultural programs.
Careers and pathways in this space are as varied as the communities and practices within it. Graduates work as practising artists, cultural educators, community arts workers, program coordinators, and arts administrators. They work with community organisations, local governments, arts companies, schools, and cultural institutions.
The qualification pathway from Certificate II through Certificate IV provides a progression that reflects growing depth of practice, knowledge, and professional capability — from foundational cultural arts participation through to independent practice and leadership within a cultural arts context.
This training is delivered on Country, in community, and in the environments where cultural arts practice actually happens. The workplace mentor model applies here as it does across all Specialised training pathways — but in this context, the mentor is likely to be a respected community member, Elder, or established cultural arts practitioner whose authority in this space is recognised by the community itself.
We work with the community to identify and approve the right mentor for each candidate. We provide the framework, the logbook, and the assessment structure. The community provides the knowledge, the practice environment, and the cultural authority that makes this training meaningful.
RPL is available across all levels of this pathway. For candidates with deep cultural arts practice and community recognition, RPL may be the most appropriate and respectful pathway to formal qualification.
